How Is Osseous Surgery Performed?
Osseous surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure, which usually takes about 1 – 2 hours, depending on the number of teeth and severity of gum disease. During the surgery, the gums are gently lifted to expose the roots and surrounding bone, allowing our periodontist to remove infected tissue, thoroughly clean the root surfaces, and smooth or reshape the bone to eliminate deep pockets. Once complete, the gums are repositioned and sutured to promote healthy reattachment and healing. Mild soreness or swelling may occur for a few days, but most patients recover quickly and notice improved gum health and stability soon after treatment.
