What Is Ridge Augmentation?
Ridge augmentation is a restorative dental procedure designed to rebuild and reshape areas of the jawbone that have lost volume or contour due to tooth extraction, gum disease, or injury. At Western Mass Perio Group, this treatment restores the natural shape of the bone and gums, improving both function and appearance. By rebuilding the ridge, patients can achieve a more stable foundation for future restorations and maintain proper facial structure. How Is Ridge Augmentation Surgery Performed?
Ridge augmentation surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia or sedation to ensure comfort and usually takes 1 – 2 hours, depending on the extent of bone loss. During the procedure, your periodontist gently opens the gum tissue to access the affected area and places bone grafting material along the deficient ridge to restore its height and width. In some cases, a special membrane is added to protect the graft and promote proper healing. Once the graft is in place, the gum tissue is sutured closed, and over the following months, the grafted material integrates with the natural bone to rebuild strength, shape, and volume in the jaw.
What Are the Benefits of Ridge Augmentation?
Ridge augmentation offers both functional and aesthetic benefits by restoring lost bone structure and supporting long-term oral health. Benefits include:
- Rebuilds natural jawbone shape and contour
- Provides a stable foundation for future restorations
- Improves gum and bone symmetry for a more natural look
- Prevents further bone loss after tooth extraction
- Enhances facial appearance and support
- Promotes better overall oral health and stability
Western Mass Perio Group Reviews
"Went to Nobel Perio regarding a previous implant process that was totally unsatisfactory. This office is the elite of implant specialists!! Although it was a painful process, I couldn't be happier with my "corrected" implant! Very highly recommend!"
"The staff at Nobel Perio are wonderful. I was escorted to an exam room at my appointment time. Jennifer was very professional and explained the procedures to me. She created a treatment plan that we both agreed to. The office staff are great to work with. I am looking forward to continuing with my treatment at Nobel Perio."
"All are very friendly and helpful at this office!! I had many questions that were all answered and my worries lessened. My mom came with me and she said she’s never been to a more friendlier office as she was asked multiple times if she needed anything as a coffee or water. The doctor is wonderful and did an amazing job for my gum surgery. Thank you."
"Always feel so welcomed and everyone is so friendly! Dr Schmidt is knowledgeable and makes me feel comfortable! So happy I go there."
"Amazing, was taken as a new patient quickly, thankfully because I had an infection that needed to be remediated. After my consultation I was scheduled for surgery within a couple of weeks. Very professional care by Dr Salzman and staff. I highly recommend if you need work done!"

Sinus Augmentation Procedure
To complete the sinus augmentation procedure, our doctors will create an incision on the molar or premolar region to reveal the patient's jawbone. Next, a small incision is made in the bone and membrane lining before the sinus is pushed upward. The space beneath this sinus area is then filled with bone graft material from your body or that of a cadaver. Synthetic bone graft materials can also be used. Once the graft has been implemented the incisions will be closed and your healing process will begin. Within several months, the graft will adhere to your jawbone, helping it to become strong enough to withstand dental implants.
If the bone is strong enough to withstand a dental implant, but our dentists feel it would be wise to incorporate a bone graft for precaution, sinus augmentation and dental implant procedures can be performed at the same time. In all other cases, the bone graft will need sufficient time to heal before dental implants be can installed.
Although the process may seem daunting, bone grafting procedures make it possible to attain strong, beautiful dental implants and to put the days of loose and slipping dentures behind you.
